Garage Door Painting in Moreno Valley

Two white sectional garage doors with raised panels, set in tan stucco, framed by a taupe painted trim band, clay tile roof above, concrete driveway, Inland Empire, CA

Garage doors that face the Moreno Valley sun all afternoon

On most tract fronts here the garage door is the single biggest painted surface on the house, and it often takes more sun than anything else facing the street. We wash it, take the gloss off, prime any bare steel and lay on a coat made for metal. Browse a few finished fronts, then get a ballpark on yours.

When a whole street fades on the same schedule

Moreno Valley was built out in big planned tracts from the 1980s into the 2000s. The houses on a given street usually went up together, got their first paint together, and now wear out together. When one neighbor’s door turns chalky, the doors on either side are rarely more than a season behind. Our trucks work the streets around Towngate, Sunnymead Ranch and the March field side regularly, so we see that pattern up close.

The sameness works on you from both directions. A garage door is easy to compare against the one next door, so a sloppy job stands out to everyone driving by. It also means your neighbors are probably weighing the same repaint you are, and a door done right becomes the one the block measures against.

It is also why a lot of owners start with the garage door. It is the surface people notice from the sidewalk, it usually shows wear before the stucco around it does, and it is a much smaller commitment than repainting the whole outside of the house in one go.

John started this company after an employer kept putting on half the paint each job called for, and that never sat right with him. A garage door is big and flat, which makes it an easy place to stretch a can a little too far. Ours get the amount the manufacturer specifies, on every panel. Already holding a number from somebody else? Show it to us and we will tell you what it really covers.

South and west doors chalk out first

Most doors on these streets are steel sectionals that came with a factory coating and have been painted at least once since. On a south or west exposure that coating breaks down under the sun. Drag a dark cloth across a panel and it comes away white. That powder is the old paint coming apart, and it is exactly what new paint will grab onto if nobody washes it off first.

Fading follows the same map. A door on the shady side of the street can hold its color for years after the sun-side door across from it has gone flat and pale. So before anyone talks products or price, we look at the door you actually own and the exposure it actually gets. Our full garage door painting service follows that same rule wherever we work.

The trim band around the opening

Look at the trim that frames a garage opening. On plenty of houses it is a separate color, a taupe or brown band around a white door, and that band is what ties the door into the rest of the front. We decide with you whether to refresh it in the same color, match it to the door, or set the two apart on purpose, and it gets the same full coat as the door when it is in scope. That work falls under trim painting.

Pick the door color while standing at the curb. The door is never seen alone; it is always seen with the trim, the stucco and the roof above it.

Getting a steel door ready to hold paint

1

Wash the chalk away

A pressure wash or a hand scrub with a cleaner takes off chalk, road dust and sprinkler spotting. Paint laid over that powder bonds to the powder instead of the steel, and it lets go early in flakes you can pick off with a fingernail.

2

Degloss whatever still shines

Any part of the old coating that still has sheen gets scuffed or chemically deglossed, so the new coat has something to bite. The recessed edges around each raised panel get the same attention as the flat faces, because that is where a rushed painter skips.

3

Spot-prime bare or rusted metal

Dings, scraped corners and the bottom edge near the driveway often show bare steel or the start of rust. Those spots are cleaned to sound metal and primed with a rust-inhibiting primer before any color goes on. Where rust has spread past spot work, our rust prevention coatings are the better fit.

4

A topcoat made for metal

The finish coat is a product rated for exterior metal. Leftover wall paint from the garage shelf was made for stucco and drywall, and on a steel door in full sun it fades and fails long before it should. Every panel gets the complete coat the label calls for.

What stays bare, and how the door keeps working

A garage door is a machine as much as it is a surface. Paint in the wrong place makes it louder, stickier, or stuck halfway, and none of that shows up until the opener starts complaining.

Parts that never see a brush

The rubber weatherstrip along the bottom and sides stays unpainted, and so do the rollers, the tracks and the springs. Paint on weatherstrip cracks and stiffens the rubber so it stops sealing. Paint on rollers or tracks makes the door drag. Springs carry serious tension, and we leave them alone entirely. All of it gets masked before the first coat goes on.

Panels that dry without gluing shut

Fresh paint where two sections meet can bond them together as it dries, and the first trip of the opener tears the film along every joint. We move the door during the job so those joints never sit closed on wet paint, and before we leave you hear exactly when it is safe to run it normally.

Mornings for the door that takes the sun

On metal, the temperature of the surface matters far more than whatever the porch thermometer says. A steel door in afternoon sun gets too hot to hold a hand on, and paint laid on it skins over before it can level and bond. Sun-side doors get painted in the morning. Doors on the shaded side wait until afternoon.

Dark colors on a door that faces the sun

A deep brown or charcoal door can look sharp against cream stucco, and it will also run hotter in afternoon sun than a white one. The darker the color, the more the panels heat up, the faster the finish fades, and the more it matters that the product is rated for that exposure. We will happily paint a dark door on the sunny side of the street. We just want you choosing it with that tradeoff in plain view.

Jobs that share the ladder and the drop cloths

Garage door questions from Moreno Valley driveways

Can you paint a steel garage door?

Yes, and most doors on tract streets here are steel sectionals. The job is washing off chalk, deglossing any sheen, spot-priming bare or rusted metal, then a topcoat made for exterior metal. Wall paint left over from the house is the wrong product and fails early in full sun.

Why is my garage door chalky when the house is not?

A door often faces the street head on and catches more direct sun than the walls beside it, and its thin factory coating has less to spend. The binder breaks down, loose pigment sits on top, and a dark cloth comes away white. All of that gets washed off before painting.

Do you paint the weatherstrip and rollers?

No. Weatherstrip, rollers, tracks and springs stay bare and are masked before the first coat. Paint stiffens the rubber seals and makes rollers and tracks drag. Springs hold heavy tension and are left completely alone. Only the door panels, and the trim band if you want it, get color.

Should the trim around the door match the door?

It depends on the house. A lot of fronts frame a white door with a taupe or brown band, and that contrast ties the door to the trim and fascia. Others look cleaner in one color. We hold samples up against your own stucco and make the call with you there.

What time of day do you paint a garage door?

Whenever the steel is cool enough to touch comfortably. A sun-side door heats up fast, and paint laid on hot metal skins over before it can bond. We do those doors in the morning and leave doors on the shaded side for the afternoon, so the surface suits the coat.

Can I use my garage while the paint dries?

You can still walk in and out, but the big door should stay where we leave it while the coat sets. We move it during the job so the sections do not bond together, and before we pack up we tell you when it is safe to run the opener again.

Have us look at the door in person

Tell us which way the door faces and what color it wears now, and we will set a time to come by. We check the steel for rust and chalk, look at the trim band with you, and you have a price in hand before we pull away from the curb.
